What is the future of fusion energy?

Fusion energy is the process that powers the stars, including our Sun.

In 1920, British astronomer and physicist Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington floated the beguiling idea of harnessing this 'latent power' for the well-being of the human race.

The promise was not only near limitless power but was also clean energy, generating no radioactive waste.

Claims have regularly been made in more recent decades that viable fusion power is 'just around the corner'.

So will fusion power ever safely generate cheap energy at an industrial scale?
