Today, the L’Oréal For Women in Science fellowships opened. There are three $20,000 fellowships for early-career women scientists. If you know of someone who fits the bill, please let them know.
And tomorrow kicks off 100 hours of astronomy, with viewings of stars and galaxies happening around the globe and in Australia. If you’re interested in taking part, I’ve listed the events happening in Victoria.

Course: Webs, wikis, blogs and avatars…what the?
A hands-on interactive course on using web 2.0 tools for effective communication.
Web 2.0 is an enigma. Few people can explain what it is, but everyone seems to think it is cool, or could be, if only they knew what it was and how to use it.
Last year we held an ASC meeting introducing the 21st Century world of web 2.0.
Growing from that meeting we now present a six hour course on using web 2.0 for effective communication. This course will reveal the mysteries of Web 2.0 and how science communicators can use it as a tool.
The course will be presented by RMIT’s Grant Soosaloo. And there’s a substantial discount for ASC members.

Time: 3:15 for 3:30pm start. Finish 9pm

L’Oréal For Women in Science fellowships now open
Applications for the 2009 L’Oréal Australia For Women in Science Fellowships are now open. Applications close 1 May 2009. The Fellowships are open to female scientists no more than five years past their PhD, excluding periods of maternity leave.

Nominations for the 2010 UNESCO- L’ORÉAL International Fellowships are also open. The International Fellowships are worth US$40,000 over two years and are available to female doctoral and post-doctoral scientists under 35 years old with a focus on Life Sciences to study at an institution outside Australia. Three of the 15 International Fellowships will be awarded in the Asia-Pacific Region, which includes Australia.

100 hours of astronomy
Take a look at the stars and galaxies during one of the 60 public events and viewings that kick off the 100 Hours of Astronomy, a round-the-clock, round-the-globe event to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy.
Some of the events happening in Victoria are:
- “The Universe from beginning to end” talk by Brian Schmidt at Monash University on Thursday 2 April.
- “NSW/Victoria – International Sidewalk Astronomy” public viewings with the Astronomical Society of Albury-Wodonga in Wodonga on Friday 3 April.
- “Shallow sky viewing night” with the Astronomical Society of Melbourne on Friday 3 April.
- “Heavens above” stargazing with the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society at the Briars on Friday 3 April.
- “Observing the constellations” from a banana lounge in Wattle Park with expert guidance from the Astronomical Society of Victoria on Friday 3 April.
- Solar viewing and Q&A session with astronomer Tanya Hill at the Melbourne Planetarium on Sunday 5 April.

Media and communication training for scientists
Science in Public runs media and communication workshops for scientists once a month. This course is for scientists and anyone who needs to communicate complex and technical ideas via the media. The workshop will help you create and present a compelling view of your research to the media, the public and your stakeholders.
The dates for our next courses are:
- Tuesday 5 May
- Tuesday 9 June
- Wednesday 15 July
Three working journalists will join us in the course of the day to talk about newspapers, radio and TV, and conduct practice interviews. Journalists we have used in the past have included Gerard Scholten from Channel Ten, Bridie Smith from The Age, Dina Rosendorf from the Herald Sun and Donna De Maio from 3AW news.
Previous participants tell us that after the course they feel more prepared, not just for media interviews but also for other presentations to stakeholders, customers and the public.
This workshop is a modified version of the courses developed by our colleagues at Econnect Communication and is licensed from them.
Each course is limited to 12 participants.
