THE MISSING LINK: IDA COMES TO THE WCSFP IN MELBOURNE

Just announced for the 2009 Congress in Melbourne, delegates will meet the team behind this year’s blockbuster, The Link – Uncovering our Earliest Ancestor. When the world was first introduced to IDA the fossil this past May the headlines screamed “extraordinary find is missing link in human evolution.” Following the news conference was the book, the website, the television program and then – controversially – the scientific paper. No documentary in history had such pre-launch publicity, and the phenomenal ratings on History Channel, BBC and ZDF reflected that impact. Nor has any documentary so blatantly preempted the accepted system of peer review in such science journals as Nature. The man who masterminded the deal, CEO of Atlantic Productions and producer of the documentary Anthony Geffen, as well as the key scientists and broadcasters, will appear in Melbourne. The team will take delegates through all stages of the production, executed over two years under a tight blanket of secrecy, and will confront the critics who questioned whether the whole process was an incredible coup or incredible hype.

WHY I’LL BE IN MELBOURNE: PTV PRODUCTIONS’ ANDREA NEMTIN

“My colleagues and I have decided this year to attend the WCSFP instead of MIPCOM. In the current climate, pre-sales and co-productions are essential. After the USA and UK, Australia and New Zealand are the largest English-speaking markets to work with. In our experience the only way to really establish a working relationship with a client or co-producers is to go to them. With the co-production treaty and a very similar financing system, Australia and New Zealand are natural co-production partners for Canadian producers. Also, National Geographic and Discovery are two of our largest clients, and the WCSFP offers an intimate environment to build relationships with them. Finally, did I mention the Great Barrier Reef in December?”

Andrea Nemtin is a Canadian producer and president of PTV Productions based in Toronto. To read additional testimonials, visit www.wcsfp.com.
