A special event at the Shanghai World Expo has marked the 30th anniversary of the official partnership between Australia and China in science.
During the past three decades Australian and Chinese researchers have worked together on projects to reduce child mortality rates, treat eye and skin disease using lasers and captured solar energy.
We produced a commemorative book for DIISR showcasing thirty of these collaborations.

30 YEARS AND COUNTING IN AUSTRALIA–CHINA SCIENCE PARTNERSHIPS
A special event at the Shanghai World Expo has marked the 30th anniversary of the official partnership between Australia and China in science.
During the past three decades Australian and Chinese researchers have worked together on projects to reduce child mortality rates, treat eye and skin disease using lasers and captured solar energy.
The Partners for a Better Future: Australia-China Science and Technology Week has recognised those achievements and many others.
Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said the collaboration had been long and fruitful, producing many successes.
“Our partnership with China is incredibly productive – it is one of our longest official science and research partnerships and continues to go from strength to strength,” Kim Carr said.
“Like Australia, China is among the world’s leading nations in science and research, and our partnership has produced life-changing results in fields that have a direct impact on our day-to-day lives.
“The volume of joint work is impressive. For example, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has more collaborations with Australian partners than any other international institution.
“China is now the third most important partner in scientific publications for Australian researchers, and Australia is China’s sixth most important partner.
A commemorative book highlighting some of these collaborations has been released to mark the 30th anniversary.
“Like any great partnership, this is one that continues to grow. A similar book produced in 30 years’ time would be certain to contain projects that we can scarcely conceive of today.”
Scientists from both countries have participated in a series of events as part of Partners for a Better Future: Australia-China Science and Technology Week.
The commemorative book is available at: http://www.innovation.gov.au/Section/science/Documents/Aust-ChinaBook.pdf
